Ordering Information

Please contact micaseorders@umich.edu and we will send you an order form which you can then either fax to us or send by ordinary mail (details are on the order form). We do not recommend sending your credit card details by e-mail.

Our sound files are available in two different formats, so first decide which format makes sense for you. Each set (A and B) contains the same 61 sound files. However, set A is arranged according to speech event type (large lecture, small lecture, office hours, etc.), and B is arranged by academic division (social sciences, humanities, etc.).

Volume A: Arranged by Speech Event type (Complete list of sound files)

CD 1: Colloquia
CD 2: Large Lectures A
CD 3: Large Lectures B
CD 4: Small Lectures A
CD 5: Small Lectures B
CD 6: Advising and Office Hours
CD 7: Seminars, Discussion Sections, and Labs
CD 8: Meetings, Study Groups, and Student Presentations
CD 9: Miscellaneous Speech Events

Volume B: Arranged by Academic Division (Complete list of sound files)

CD 1: Biological and Health Sciences A
CD 2: Biological and Health Sciences B
CD 3: Physical Sciences and Engineering A
CD 4: Physical Sciences and Engineering B
CD 5: Social Sciences and Education A
CD 6: Social Sciences and Education B

Each CD contains

  • Between 5 and 9 complete speech events
  • 9 to 10 hours of recorded speech, with a few exceeding 10 hours
  • The orthographic (non-POS-tagged) version of the corresponding transcripts for each audio file
  • Between 480 and 640 megabytes of data

Note on sound quality

All of the sound recordings for MICASE were originally recorded on digital audio tape (DAT), and although the sound quality may vary due to a variety of environmental factors and recording conditions, all meet minimum sound quality acceptability for transcription purposes; most of the available sound files are of above average sound quality for natural, non-studio recordings, and would be suitable for use in classroom teaching. The sampling rate for the MP3 sound files is 128 K/s, in stereo.

Confidentiality and anonymization

Some sound files have been anonymized, in order to ensure confidentiality. In most cases this involved simply editing over names or other identifying information using a sound editing technique that leaves the timing and rough prosodic contour intact, but distorts the words so they are incomprehensible. In a few cases, one non-primary speaker’s speech was edited out completely; these are noted on the complete list of sound files below.

Contents of each speech event

Please refer to the MICASE online website to examine the transcripts of audio files you are interested in purchasing.
